Empowering Independence
The Independence Center is one of 500+ designated Centers for Independent Living (CILs) in the United States. CILs are community-based non-profit organizations designed to provide the resources, information, and support necessary for people with disabilities to live independently. The Independent Living movement began in the 1970s around the simple but radical philosophy that with the proper support and resources, most people with disabilities can live independent lives on their own terms. CILs are not residential facilities, but rather resource centers for people with disabilities to find information about programs and services as well as to learn skills necessary for an independent life.
To qualify as a CIL
five services must be offered:
- Information and Referral
- Independent Living skills training and classes
- Transition assistance from nursing homes and other institutions to community-based residences
- Peer support/Counseling
- Individual and systemic advocacy for people with disabilities
The IC offers all of these and more at no cost to the consumer.
