Today marks the first day of October, as well as the first day of an important month for The Independence Center. Nationally, October is recognized as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). NDEAM is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities.

We celebrate individuals with disabilities, their achievements through employment and the fact that people with disabilities have the education, training, experience and desire to be successful in the workplace. However, we also want to mark October as Disability Awareness Month. There are many, many layers to disability civil rights, employment being just one, and we want everyone to recognize this.

The goal of Disability Awareness Month is to increase awareness and promote independence, integration and inclusion of all people with disabilities into our community. This month we will explore the history of the Disability Civil Rights Movement, notable disability rights activists, employment for individuals with disabilities, accessible transportation, the American’s with Disabilities Act, and many other disability-related topics.
