Peer Support & Self-Advocacy

Peer Support and Individual Advocacy at The Independence Center exist as a catalyst for gaining empowerment and forming a social network. We offer peer support groups, facilitated workshops, advocacy coaching, and individual mentoring; all of which are intended to help you achieve your goals. Support Groups at The IC are designed to be all-inclusive so that no matter what your disability, you should be able to find a group that will fit you well.

Examples of some of the Peer Support Groups at The IC:

  • Cross-Disabilities
  • Family/Caregiver Encouragement
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Living Well With a Disability
  • Men’s Group
  • Women’s Group

In addition to support groups, we often offer recreational activities such as horseback riding, glow golf, and bowling. Workshops are also often facilitated with topics that consumers have suggested.

Examples of some of the facilitated workshops we’ve hosted are:

  • Adaptive Yoga
  • Adaptive Bicycling
  • Understanding Insurance

Our new formal mentoring program at The IC is called LIFT UP and allows you the opportunity to connect with another person with a similar disability in order to share life experiences and information. Consumers who desire to mentor others will go through an application process that includes an interview, meetings with The IC staff, a background check, and educational training. Once approved, mentors will be paired with those they’ll mentor.

For more information about the mentor program, contact the Peer Mentor Coordinator at 719-471-8181.

Testimonials

Lauren

"I am a recent graduate of The IC CNA School and a new employee to The IC. I am so proud to be a part of such a warm and caring team! I loved how the course is fast, to the point, yet very thorough. And the great part is that it’s taught in a way that you will never forget. I was able to ace both my written and clinical exams! I feel confident with my training that I have the foundation that I need to be an effective and efficient CNA. Thank you to The IC for my new career and for being such a bright light for people with disabilities!"
