The twenty sixth of July holds a special place in the hearts of most everyone who works at The Independence Center (The IC). It’s a time when we have the opportunity to reflect on the obstacles and challenges faced by individuals within the people with disabilities community, and behold the progress that has been made. July twenty sixth 1990 isn’t just some arbitrary date; it’s the day the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed in to law. Its signing gave people with disabilities new protections against discrimination in employment, public accommodations, public services, and telecommunications.

To celebrate this transformative law, The Independence Center began our annual ADA Celebration Luncheon on the twenty fifth anniversary of the signing of the ADA back in 2015, and we’ve continued that tradition ever since. This year, on its twenty seventh anniversary, the theme of our annual ADA Celebration Luncheon is “ADA – Celebrating Progress in the Pikes Peak Region”. The event will be held on July 26th from 11:45am to 1:00pm at the DoubleTree by Hilton in the Grand Ballroom. This year’s theme pays tribute to the progress that has been made in advancing the mission of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and generally celebrates the hard work that has gone into making this community a better place for people with disabilities.

Without the help of business owners, government agencies, community organizations, and disability rights advocates, the progress that’s been made, would not have been possible. That’s why during this year’s celebration luncheon, we will present five note-worthy organizations within the community with awards to celebrate their valiant efforts to progress the ADA in the Pikes Peak region. Another part of the presentation will share the true stories from the perspective of people working at The Independence Center, and their daily lives working with the people we serve. We’re so excited to be hosting this great event again this year, and hope that this year is even better than the last.

Though much progress has been made in the fight to improve accessibility and rights for people with disabilities, the battle continues.
