Founded in 1987 by Vicki Skoog, The IC is a non-profit organization helping people with disabilities create independence by leveraging their own unique abilities and skills. We are the home of civil rights for people with disabilities, and work with individuals, their families, and the community to create independence so that all may thrive.
We are not an assisted living facility, and we do not have residents.
We are one of 403 Centers for Independent Living in the United States, and one of nine in Colorado. Centers for Independent Living are community-based, cross-disability organizations that are designed for people with disabilities. More than 50% of our Staff and Board identify as a person with a disability.
We provide five Core Services:
- Information and Referral
- Individual and Systems Advocacy
- Independent Living Skills Training
- Cross-Disability Peer Support
- Transition Services (Youth, people leaving nursing homes, or at risk of entering nursing homes.)
Our Independent living services are available to any individual who self-identifies as having any disability.
Centers for Independent Living Services work to support living independently and focus on the belief that all people with disabilities can live with dignity, make their own choices, and participate fully in society.
Our Team provides trainings on Disability Awareness and Etiquette, Service Dog Etiquette, Disability Language, and other disability- and accessibility-related topics.
